Working breakfast on âRailway
Liberalizationâ, Brussels, EP
After the introductory remarks by Mr. RĂBIG MEP, Mr. VINOIS, Head of
Unit DG TREN from the European Commission gave an outline of the steps
already taken by the EU to liberalize the European railway networks.
The gist of his presentation was the so-called open access principle
which should enable other railway companies to enter the market. Mr.
Helmut KUKACKA, State Secretary in the Austrian Ministry for Transport,
Innovation and Technology, gave an overview of the measures taken by
the Austrian Government to modernize and deregulate the Austrian
Federal Railway Company (OEBB). Christopher HORNER, Research Director
of the European Enterprise Institute (EEI), talked about deregulation
in the US and mentioned a number of interesting facts and figures. Ms.
Ursula STENZEL, MEP, was also among the participants as well as Mr.
Reinhard RACK, MEP.

Environmental Breakfast, Brussels, EP
The EEI hosted an Environmental breakfast in
the European Parliament. In spite of the early hour, participating MEPs
and civil servants engaged in a lively discussion about the consequences
of the REACH proposals on the regulation of the use of chemical substances
within the European Union.

Conference on âEnergy Politics and SMEsâ, Brussels, EP
This
conference was organized by the EEI to point out the consequences of
the EU policy in the field of energy and especially its consequences
for SMEs. The security of European Energy supply and the cost of its
provision to SMEs was also a part on the agenda. The discussion took
place with speakers Paul RĂBIG (MEP), Peter MOMBAUER (MEP), Chris
HORNER (EEI), Martin AGERUP (President of the Danish Academy for Future
Studies) and Carlo STAGNARO (Bruno Leoni Institue).

November 25, 2003
Taxation Workshop, Brussels, EP
On the 25th November 2003 the "EEI Hearing on Tax Reform in Europe"
took place in the European Parliament. Mr. Peter JUNGEN, President of
the EEI, chaired this workshop. The main focus was on the presentation
of the taxation in the Slovak Republic by the Slovak Deputy PM Mr. Ivan
Miklos. About 60 participants followed the statements of Ivan Miklos
concerning the Slovakian taxation system and the latest tax-reforms in
his home country. After the conference a dinner with the Deputy Prime
Minister took place.
