U.S. 2005 economic outlook

EEI Policy Cousel Christopher C. Horner spoke on the U.S. economic outlook at EuroChambres event. The talk was a part of the EuroChambres discussion following its Economic Survey for 2005, where Mr. Horner provided a U.S. perspective.

Mr. Horner said that the U.S. economy had gained remarkable ground since 9/11 and the following economic recession, and he foresees a continued strong performance boosted by tax cuts and structural reforms.

Tax Competition in Europe -

November 25, 2004

On November 25, 2004 the EEI proudly played host to a Black Coffee meeting with Mr. Ivan Miklos, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance for the Republic of Slovakia. Mr. Miklos, in spite of his age, already a seasoned reformer and an ardent proponent of tax competition, addressed a select group of European policy makers, entrepreneurs and media at the Renaissance Hotel in Brussels.

The speech covered both personal evidence and experience drawn from the Slovak tax reforms and their possible implications for European competitiveness. The presentation was followed by an intense Q & A session.

Europe XXL

The European Enterprise Institute and Eurocommerce co-hosted a lunch discussion on Obesity, November 23rd, 2004 between 13 to 14:30 PM.

The lunch discussion labelled Europe XXL - How to deal with Obesity at a European Level? explored the current Obesity debate and searched for solutions to this European problem. During the lunch Dr. Michael Kunze from the Institute for Public Health at the University of Vienna, presented the EEI Policy paper “Obesity – epidemiology, pathogenesis, therapy and prevention", authored by Dr. Kunze together with I.Kiefer and T.Rathmanner.

The presentation was followed by interventions from Swedish MEP Mr. Christofer Fjellner as well as the Senior Vice-President for Food Safety and Regulatory Affairs at Dutch retailing giant Ahold, Mr. Fons Schmid, who also chairs the Food Policy & Consumers Committee with Eurocommerce.

EEI Luncheon: Knowledge and Competitive Advantage

The European Enterprise Institute hosted
a lunch debate at Hotel Leopold with the 2004 years Schumpeter award winner Professor J. Peter Murmann from the Kellogg School of Management. The topic for the discussion was taken from Professor Murmann’s book Knowledge and Competitive Advantage and extensively dealt with Patents and its affect on innovation and economic competitiveness. Professor Murmann provided some alternative perspectives of why a strong patent system does not necessarily promote innovation.
